- DNA FRAGMENTATION INDEX (DFI)
The sperm DNA
fragmentation index (DFI) reflects the integrity of and the damage to the DNA,
the genetic material of the sperm, thereby detecting potential sperm damage. It
is considered a crucial indicator in evaluating semen quality. The clinical
threshold is a DNA fragmentation index (DFI) of 30%- that means 30% of the
sperm have damage (with quantification into moderate or high damage) and 70%
have no detectable damage. Couples with >30% damage are more likely to do
better with ICSI rather than IVF and special techniques are used in our lab to
isolate good quality sperms in such samples along with life style changes and antioxidants.
Men with unexplained infertility.
Couples facing recurrent IVF or ICSI failure.
History of recurrent miscarriages.
Men with varicocele or exposure to heat/toxins/stress.
Lifestyle factors: smoking, obesity, or high stress.
Detects sperm DNA damage that standard semen tests miss.
Helps in personalizing fertility treatment plans.
Can guide use of antioxidants or lifestyle changes to improve sperm quality.
Supports decision to choose ICSI or PICSI for better outcomes.
Improves chances of successful fertilization and healthy embryo development.
